How to paint steel

Painting steel requires a primer with excellent adhesion, to provide a good base for your chosen top coat.

Steps

1. Surface Preparation / Priming

All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied. Remove all visible signs of organic growth and treat the area with Zinsser Mould Killer in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Wash the area to be coated with hot water and liquid detergent solution to remove any contaminants, frequently changing the water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all residues. Allow to dry.
Thoroughly degrease with methylated spirit, changing the cloths regularly.
Apply one full coat of Cover Stain® in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and allow to dry.

2. Interior Decoration

Decorate with two full coats of Perma-White® Interior Matt, Satin or Semi-Gloss in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of two hours between coats.

3. Exterior Decoration

For exterior projects decorate with two full coats of AllCoat® Exterior Satin or Gloss in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of one hour between coats.
