How to paint ceramic tiles

What you will need:

Conventional paints are ineffective on unprimed ceramic tiles. This method explains how to prime and finish tiles.

Surface Preparation

Remove all visible signs of organic growth and treat the areas with Blackfriar Anti-Mould Solution in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to dry. Ensure the surface is free from any contaminants and anything that could interfere with adhesion by washing down with hot water and liquid detergent, frequently changing the water then degrease overall with methylated spirit frequently changing the cloth. Ensure the grout is fully dry before overcoating.


Prime all bare ceramic tiles with one full coat of Bulls Eye® 1-2-3 Plus Primer Sealer in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of 1 hour in normal drying conditions.


For interior projects decorate with two full coats of Perma-White® Interior Eggshell, Satin or Semi-Gloss in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. For exterior projects apply two full coats of Perma-White® Exterior (Satin or Semi-Gloss) Allow a minimum drying time of two hours between coats.
